Résumé : |
Many studies have reported lack of collocational knowledge and competence that ESL/ EFL
students suffer from; especially that collocations are crucial aspects in learning English
vocabulary since they are the ability of frequent occurrences of words together. In the light of
all this, our main aim behind this study is to test whether students are aware of the existence
and use of collocations and, more precisely, lexical collocation adjective+ noun. Students, in
general, deal with adjectives by describing nouns and randomly adding more information to
the words next to them. Data for this study was collected from 20 third year students of
English at Mentouri Brothers University, Constantine. The sample was given a questionnaire
to answer and a test to solve. The purpose of the questionnaire was to tackle theoretical
questions about students’ opinions concerning their familiarity with collocations in general. It
was also meant to gauge their collocational knowledge. Besides, the test which was
complementary to the questionnaire, and which was meant to check on the students’ answers
to the questionnaire, tackled practical quizzes about the right combination of Adj.+ N. The
results obtained fulfilled our prediction. Indeed, most students failed to combine adjectives
with their appropriate nouns. In other words, they were unaware of the existence of words that
constantly co-occurred. In addition to this, they were neither familiar with collocations nor
with their use. Therefore, this proves that students, in general, as put forward in our
hypothesis, are unaware of the existence of collocations and are unable to use them. Besides
this, it seems that the few collocations students used correctly were found because they were
either easy or found at random. |
