Résumé : |
The current research attempts at investigating the pragmatic competence of Algerian
learners of English in making requests. Data were collected by means of a WDCT
consisting of 12 hypothetical situations. It was administrated to 40 participants in
which they were asked to write their responses for each situation. Learners‟ responses
were rated based on (CCSARP) scheme of request patterns in terms of level of
directness; while their pragmatic competence was rated according to score criteria
adopted from Cohen and Olshtain communicative Ability Scale. It was found that
Algerian learners make request following three levels of directness: direct,
conventionally indirect, and non-conventionally indirect; yet with a greater tendency
to conventionally indirect strategies. Furthermore, it was found that the mean score for
the pragmatic competence of Algerian learners in making request was 14.28 (37%).
This result indicates that their pragmatic competence was at a low level. In addition,
the finding supports the hypothesis of this study. Algerian learners of English have
committed few grammatical mistakes, proving that their grammatical knowledge is
acceptable compared to the pragmatic knowledge. This confirms that it is not
sufficient to know the grammatical features of language to achieve a successful use of
language aspects in different contexts. |
