Résumé : |
Figurative language is one of the best ways to convey implicit meaning. When it is spoken,
figurative language is easier to interpret from the speaker’s gestures, tone and attitude. However,
when it is written, recognizing and interpreting figurative language, in general, and irony, in
particular, becomes problematic, especially to learners of English as a foreign language. The
current study aims at knowing the kind of difficulties that 3rd year students of English at the
University of Constantine 1, face when interpreting written irony and how this problem affects
their language proficiency. Accordingly, it is hypothesized that the students in question would
find difficulties in the process of recognizing and interpreting written irony. To check this
hypothesis, data have been collected from a questionnaire and a test administered to a sample of
40 students. The results of the investigation revealed that students of English face difficulties in
understanding ironic sentences due to their weak English proficiency, cultural incompetence and
poor instruction of irony by teachers. Therefore, it is recommended that students should watch
movies and TV shows to learn and become familiar with the culture which will help with
recognizing the three types of irony. This should be supported by instruction inside the classroom
that deals with irony in a detailed manner. In addition to that, students themselves should try and
develop their English so that they acquire the ability to understand irony. |
