This research presents one of the learners' real problems in translation which is the
translation of the phrasal verb 'to come + particle'. It attempts to find out the reason
why First year English Master learners are unable to find the appropriate or the right
equivalents of the English phrasal verb 'to come + particle' into Arabic. To achieve
this aim; It is hypothesized that if First year English Master students of
Linguistics/Applied Language Studies, Mentouri Brothers - Constantine 1 master the
English phrasal verb ‘to come’ with different particles, they will be able to translate it
appropriately from English into Arabic. Research data are collected using a
questionnaire and a test. The questionnaire aims to get information about the learners'
knowledge and their familiarity with this typical English linguistic item. Additionally,
the test aim at having a picture about learners' ability to translate the English phrasal
verb 'to come + particle' into Arabic. The obtained results have shown learners' inability
to translate this phrasal verb into its exact Arabic equivalents, because of their
ignorance and insufficient exposure to it. They also show that learners tend to rely on
the context which misleads them, and the particle which makes them translate literally.
Thus, their translation is unacceptable. |
