This study aims to identify sarcasm as a phenomenon of language. Sarcasm takes full advantage
of language on multiple levels of meaning and linguistic properties. Furthermore, this study aims
to test the amount of knowledge provided by the curriculum currently presented to Master I
students of University Mentouri Brothers – Constantine 1. The study debates how students are
unable to understand and use Sarcasm because the curriculum does not cover the subject of
sarcasm. For this purpose, the entire class of Master I linguistics and applied languages are
chosen as the population of which twenty students are to take the questionnaire and test to find
out how the curriculum affects their knowledge of sarcasm. Also, ten teachers at the same
department will take a questionnaire to provide further insight into the subject. The study results
in that the curriculum does not necessarily affect students’ perception of sarcasm; however, it
does not provide any theoretical knowledge to aid the students understand and use sarcasm
efficiently |
