Résumé : |
Learners in a digital era are constantly immersing themselves in up to date digital electronic
devices. As they take great interest in such tools, instructors are urged to look for new
techniques based on technology to teach the different aspects of language. The focal point of
the present research is to check the effects of digital storytelling on the learning of new
vocabulary items at the middle school level, with a sample of thirty pupils, drawn from a
population size of 170 third year pupils. The study also sets out to get insights into the way
vocabulary is taught and learnt in middle school classrooms and elicits the teachers’ opinions
about the importance of the multimedia elements of digital storytelling in the learning of new
words. We hypothesize that if the pupils under study learn vocabulary through digital
storytelling, they would be able to develop their vocabulary learning. The hypothesis is
checked by means of a teachers’ questionnaire and a quasi-experiment with an Experimental
and a Control Group design that was carried out at Laouar Salah middle school in
Constantine. The pupils of the Experimental Group receive the digital stories in their school
computer lab, whereas the Control Group is taught only through the traditional printed stories.
Then, a test is designed to investigate whether digital storytelling could improve vocabulary
learning in English as a foreign language. The analysis of the data of the test indicates that the
pupils who watched the digital stories outscored the pupils who read the traditional printed
stories in both parts of the test. The results obtained from the teachers’ questionnaire show
that all the teachers have positive opinions regarding the usefulness of the multimedia
elements of digital storytelling in the learning of new words. These findings validate our
research hypothesis that digital storytelling contributes positively to the improvement of
learners’ vocabulary learning. |
