Résumé : |
The present research attempts to investigate the interlingual errors committed by second year
students of English at the University of Frères Mentouri, Constantine. Most importantly, it
seeks to identify the most frequent Interlingual errors students commitin their written
productions, and to explain the main reasons of their production. This study hypothesizes that
the most frequent Interlingual errors occur at the level of grammar. It also hypothesizes that
the reasons behind their production of errors are due mainly to the interference of first
language (Arabic). To answer the aims and the research hypothesis we administered a test to a
sample of 50 second year students. The test aims at identifying, describing, classifying and
explaining the interlingual errors generated in the participants’ essay. By following James’
(1998) lexical errors taxonomy and Darus’ and Ching’s (2009) grammatical and syntactic
description of errors, the results obtained reveal that verb tenses, subject/verb disagreement
and prepositions represent the most frequent errors types committed in the participants’
productions. The most frequent reason for the production of interlingual errors was primarily
due to the interference of the students’ first language |
