Résumé : |
This present dissertation attempts to investigate Algerian EFL students’ communicative
competence in relation with the realization of the speech act of requesting. In brief, this study
discusses two major aspects that face students when learning a foreign language namely
communicative competence and speech acts. Communicative competence refers to the
learner’s ability to produce appropriate utterances that are relevant to a given context. This
notion in itself governs a set of different competencies such as pragmatic competence, sociocultural competence, and linguistic competence. All these competencies are considered as
important components which help the learner to construct his communicative competence.
Thus, it is assumed that in order to be communicatively competent students need to extend
their knowledge to the social and cultural norms of the target language. This study also
discusses the theory of speech acts which states that language is used to convey actions rather
than describing things. This work sheds light on one particular speech act namely the speech
act of requesting. In attempting to investigate the students’ awareness in the performance of
this kind of speech act, and confirm or otherwise the validity of the research hypothesis,
which stipulates that, if EFL learners lack communicative competence, they will likely fail to
achieve an effective communication in requesting. So, in of order to achieve the purpose of
this study, a questionnaire was directed to 25 participants of M1students of English at
Mentouri Brothers University-Constantine 1. Findings of the study reveal that our students are
able to perform requests utterances in terms of grammar correctness however, some of them
had failed to perform appropriate and meaningful requests which are relevant to different
situations. Students do not give importance to some factors such as the social distance of the
interlocutors, the degree of imposition of the requests and the level of directness |
