Résumé : |
This research work is an investigation of the collocational competence of Algerian
second year undergraduate EFL students at Université des Frères Mentouri
(Constantine). The study focuses on lexical collocations, namely, VERB+NOUN
collocations. It aims at investigating the collocational competence of EFL learners,
pinning down the underlying causes of errors. It is hypothesized that Algerian EFL
undergraduate students have a low mastery when it comes to the usage and
production of V+N lexical collocations. In addition, students’ essays lack the use of
appropriate collocations. The present study used students’ essays as tools of
measurement. The British National Corpus, collocation checker, and Oxford Online
Collocation Dictionary are the measurement references chosen to measure Algerian
EFL learners’ collocational competence. The findings confirm the hypotheses
emphasising Algerian EFL learners’ ignorance and unawareness of the importance of
collocations. In addition, the findings show that the influence of the mother tongue,
along with some other factors, are the primary causes of errors. By identifying the
main areas of difficulty via an error analysis, teachers will be able to design
appropriate material to raise their learners’ awareness of the concept of collocation,
tackle the main problematic areas, and, therefore, improve their level. |
