EFL Students generally face many problems in translating idioms from English into Arabic
and this is due to factors such as the idiosyncrasy of the source and target language and the
differences between the two cultures. EFL students often tend to use word for word translation
which yields non-acceptable products. The present study aims at two basic targets. First, it sheds
light on the relation between the idiom type and the students’ method in translating English
idioms into Arabic. Second, it studies the role of context in translating idioms. We hypothesize
that the more an idiom is opaque the more the students would tend to translate it formally. We
also hypothesize that the context would be helpful in the case of universal idioms but not in the
case OF culture-bound idioms. The subjects of our research are twenty Master one students of
Applied Language Studies in the English Department at university of Mentouri Constantine 1. In
order to check out the hypothesis, a translation test is used to collect data. The test is made up of
twelve English idioms of two types: universal and culture bound and carried out through two
steps. The results of the analysis have shown that the majority of Master one students are not
familiar with the idioms under study and that’s why they translate them formally. The results
also show that the context helps the students in predicting the meaning of universal idioms, but it
does not in the case of culture-bound type. The study recommends that students should be taught
culture-bound items (idioms) explicitly. |
