Music has been used to aid cognitive processing for decades, and an increasing number of
educators have attempted to maximize the learning process by integrating music in their
curricula. This dissertation was intended to investigate the cognitive and psychological effects
of classical background music in the area of learning foreign languages. In order to achieve
the objectives of this research, an extensive study of related literature was included and a
practical research was carried out. Two tests were implemented to both secondary school
pupils and university students; one proficiency test was conducted to assess the participants’
level in English proficiency, and another test was designed to check the participants’
performance in reading comprehension in different conditions. Two questionnaires were also
conducted for teachers, students and pupils of our interest. One questionnaire was carried out
to check the students’ and pupils’ opinions about the usefulness of music in foreign language
classrooms. Whereas the other questionnaire was implemented to see how teaching foreign
languages with the inclusion of music will be done from the teachers’ point of view. The
results obtained from both the quantitative and qualitative research showed that both the
learners and the teachers are more convinced by the psychological effects of classical music.
In other words, they claimed that music will help more in lowering learners’ anxiety and
increasing their self-confidence than in improving their concentration and memorization
abilities. This research produced a number of key findings that lead us to imply some
suggestions that may help in teaching and learning foreign languages. For example, music can
be considered as a valuable pedagogical tool but with limits, and teachers should be selective
when choosing the appropriate music that positively affects the mental and affective state of |
