Résumé : |
This dissertation explains the reasons behind the behavioral change of the narrator of Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Black Cat.” The narrator who tells the story that leads him to the gallows was an animal lover and has changed into an animal abuser. Thus, the major question is whether this change comes from his superstitious beliefs or from his deceased mind. To prove this hypothesis, the work mentions some mythical beliefs that affect the narrator’s behavior, and for the psychological factors, the research relies on Freud’s theory of structures of personality and its defense mechanisms in order to understand the narrator’s behavior and transformation. Upon completion of the analysis, this dissertation affirms that the main character’s transformation occurs because of the internal factors (psychological disorder) supported by the external ones (alcohol and superstition). |
