Résumé : |
Writing is an intricate and complex task; it is often considered the most difficult of all the
language abilities to master. Cohesion is a process which links sentences and paragraphs
together, and it makes them significant entities. This study aims at analysing the extent to
which third year EFL students are aware of the use of cohesive devices in creating accurate
and adequate pieces of writing. For this purpose, it is hypothesized that the appropriate use of
cohesive ties would foster students’ writing abilities. A descriptive study is carried out
through ensuring two basic tools: A questionnaire that is submitted for ten ‘Written
Expression’ teachers in order to identify their attitudes towards the students’ level in writing
in terms of using cohesive devices. In addition to a test which is given to 25 third year EFL
students at the Department of Arts and English Language at Mentouri Brothers University
Constantine 1 in order to examine their use of cohesive ties in their assignments. The results
obtained reveal that third year EFL learners are sometimes aware of the importance of
cohesive relations, but they fail in making balance in using those ties. Besides, there is an
inappropriate employment of these relations in which students exaggerate in repeating the
same items and ignoring others, hence, this results in non-cohesive writings most of the time. |
