Learning vocabulary is an essential task when learning a foreign language.
However, most learners seem to experience many difficulties in learning vocabulary. The
present study aims at investigating the actual use of one vocabulary strategy which is
‘guessing from context’ among first-year LMD students at Mila University. It is
hypothesized that if first-year students make use of guessing from context strategy they
would improve their ability of inferring the meaning of the unknown words. To test our
hypothesis, we administered a questionnaire of 20 questions to 30 participants of first year
students and a test which is given to the same students to investigate their actual use of
‘guessing from context strategy’. The results reveal that students use the ‘guessing from
context strategy’ to learn new vocabulary. Moreover, students improve their vocabulary
comprehension when they are confronted with vocabulary in context rather than words in
isolation. However, there is an unawareness of some contextual clues which should be
known to them. |
