Résumé : |
The present study investigates the students’ awareness of the existence of false friends
and the effect of the ignorance or unconsciousness of this concept on their reading
comprehension. We hypothesized that English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students rely on
their knowledge in French to read in English and are not aware of the existence of false
friends which affect their reading comprehension. In order to assess our hypothesis, we used
two means of research, the students’ questionnaire and test, administered to a sample of 50
students from third year C.O.P. students at Mentoury university of Constantine. The analysis
of the findings showed that almost all the students rely on language transfer from French into
English when reading in English, and more importantly, most of them are not aware of the
existence of linguistic false friends. a negative transfer is likely to occur and affects their
reading comprehension |

Languages False Friends French-English Learning English |
Index. décimale : |

Résumé : |
This research aims at investigating a significant area of translation where negative
transfer takes place, which are cognates and false friends. It sheds light on the
difficulties that students face in performing in English because of translating from
French into English. We hypothesize that if students had background knowledge
about the phenomenon of false friends, they would avoid making negative transfer
and, they would be able to improve their translating from French into English as a
means to perform in English. To check the validity of this hypothesis, a questionnaire
and a test are administered to a sample of first year Master students at the Department
of Letters and English Language, Mentouri, Constantine 1. The results show that the
majority of the students are not aware enough of false friends, and they do not pay
attention to the similarities and differences and how they can be used successfully. In
addition to that they are not able to give the right equivalents of the French words
given in the questionnaire and the test. On the basis of the results obtained, we
recommend that teachers give more importance to false friends in their teaching and
raise the consciousness of students about this problem so that they can avoid falling
easily in the trap of similarities across French and English which do not always
facilitate learning. |
