Résumé : |
Learning foreign languages became very interesting and gained appreciation more often.
Foreign language learning forces peoples' brain to learn and think in different ways, as it
deepens peoples’ understanding and appreciation for the rich and complex world we live in.
The objective of foreign language education, accordingly, is no longer identified strictly in
terms of mastering the linguistic side of the language, but mastering the intercultural
competence, including intercultural attitudes. However, in the Department of English at
Constantine University, one does not know how much learning English as a foreign language
may contribute in shaping the students’ intercultural attitudes. The aim of this research,
therefore, was to investigate the impact of learning a foreign language upon the students’
attitudes towards foreign cultures. Having set such an aim, this dissertation stood on the
hypothesis that learning English as a foreign language affects positively the students’
intercultural attitudes. For the purpose of proving the credibility of this hypothesis, two
questionnaires were distributed. The first one was directed to the students of English in the
Department of Letters and English Languages, while the second one was addressed to the
students of Arabic in the Department of Letters and Arabic Language, owing to make a
distinction between the attitudes of the students of Arabic and attitudes of the students of
English. Based on the students’ responses and the statistical analysis of the two
questionnaires, the results revealed that the students of English scored better than the students
of Arabic in terms of interaction engagement, respect for cultural differences, interaction
confidence, interaction enjoyment, and interaction attentiveness. In other words, the students
of English were found to have more positive intercultural attitudes compared with the students
of Arabic. |
