Résumé : |
The aim of this dissertation is to gain a deeper understanding of how adjective sequences in
English are translated into Arabic with a scrutiny of the basic order adjectives may follow when
listed in a series and the main constraints that govern this order in both languages. The study
hypothesizes that learners of English face some serious problems when translating adjective
sequences from English into Arabic; this is mainly because there is no one-to-one
correspondence between the modification systems in both languages. Therefore, the question
that poses itself in this thesis is whether students should translate semantically or
communicatively in order to give a faithful rendering. A test was administered to a sample of
students reading for a Master degree in Applied Language Studies, Department of English Arts
and Languages, University of Constantine 1. The conclusion is that most students face serious
problems in translating adjectives sequences, mainly, because there is no absolute one-to-one
correspondence between adjective ordering in English and Arabic. Most informants who
succeeded in translating were those who translated communicatively |
