The present dissertation aims to shed light on the translation problems that abbreviations and acronyms involve. It is an attempt to check the problems encountered by 3rd year students when translating abbreviations and acronyms. The aim is to determine the sources of the deviant translations and to figure out the Arabic correspondences to be applied in translation. The data was gathered by means of two research tools in the form of a questionnaire and a test. These research tools were constructed to examine the hypothesis of this study which is students’ difficulties in translating abbreviations and acronyms due to their ignorance of the origins and the use of inadequate methods of translation and to elicit samples of the student’s translations. Through the observation and analysis of the students’ renditions, it was possible to identify the chief problems encountered in translation. The attained results reveal that the students do not encounter problems in differentiating between abbreviations and acronyms .Yet, they face problems in determining the origins of abbreviations and acronyms and finding the appropriate equivalent in the other language, and therefore the students mistranslate. |

The present research attempts to examine the problems encountered by learners while
translating cultural elements or expressions. It aims to investigate the students’ awareness of
these problems and the strategies suggested to solve them. The data is collected by means of a
questionnaire and a test in which the students have been asked to translate some Arabic as
well as English sentences that contain cultural terms in order to check the validity of our
hypothesis. The research hypothesis explores whether EFL students are aware of the
integration of culture when they convert cultural specific expressions or not .The results
obtained revealed that First Year Master students of English fail to convert culture-specific
expressions properly as they are not aware of culture as a significant factor in translation.
Eventually, some pedagogical recommendations are given to promote the students’ ability in
translation. |

This research investigates the ability of first year Master students of English in Applied
Language Studies to produce a cohesive target text by means of appropriate grammatical
cohesive namely reference, ellipsis, substitution, and conjunction from English into Arabic.
Based on our assumption that first year Master students are able to achieve cohesion using
appropriate grammatical cohesive devices named reference, ellipsis, substitution and
conjunction from English into Arabic, a test has been administrated to a sample of 40 students
at the Department of English, University of Frères Mentouri Constantine. The obtained results
of the field work have revealed that the majority of the students pay attention to cohesion
while translating the source text. More particularly, they were able to produce a cohesive
target text using accurate grammatical cohesive ties .As such, our assumption has been
confirmed. In the light of these results, it is essential for the students to be aware of the role of
the grammatical cohesive devices in achieving cohesion |

This research aims at exploring the influence of the pragmatic competence on the translation
performance of first year Master English students at the University of Mentouri Bros.,
Constantine. It attempts to examine whether or not students’ difficulties in translating phatic
expressions are the result of their unfamiliarity with English language culture. To achieve
these aims, we hypothesise that if students have not sufficient pragmatic background in
English, they will not be able to translate phatic expressions into Arabic. To check the validity
of this hypothesis, a questionnaire and a translation test are administered to a sample of 20 of
first year Master students at University Mentouri Bros. of Constantine. The obtained results
show that the students’ translation performance has been unsatisfactory because they lack
sufficient competence in both, pragmatic and translation. Therefore, this study tries to make
the student aware of the influence of culture on translating such fixed expressions and helping
them to enhance their performance, especially in the field of intercultural translation by giving
some strategies to achieve a successful cross- cultural translation |

This study is an attempt to shed light on the translation of the agentive passive voice from
English into Arabic. It aims at revealing the students’ method of translation, and to examine
the students’ awareness of the differences between the passive constructions in Arabic and
English. We hypothesised that if first year Master students at the Department of English Arts
and Language, University of Constantine 1, avoid literal translation, they will succeed in
their task of translating the English agentive passive construction into Arabic. A
questionnaire and test are administered to a random sample of fifty first year Master students
majoring in applied languages in the department of Arts and English language– University of
Constantine 1. The results obtained show that the students do translate literally. They also
show that students are completely unaware of the differences between the passive
construction in both English and Arabic. This is proven by contrasting the students’
translations with an expert’s translation model. Finally, it is recommended to teachers of
Arabic to emphasise that the passive in Arabic is agentless and that it is used less frequently
than other languages. It is also recommended for translation teachers to include some courses
about translating the passive voice. |
