Résumé : |
Recently, new approaches have been emerged in the field of teaching English as a foreign
language (TEFL). ESP (English for Specific Purposes) and its sub-branch EST (English for
Science and Technology) are the ones that have gained great attention. Designing ESP
courses for foreign learners should obey many criteria. Accordingly, this research aims at
foregrounding the different stages of the course design for EST learners in general. More
specifically, it takes the second year undergraduate students at computer science department
in Constantine 2 University as a case of study. It investigates to what extent their professional
and communicative needs, and their attitudes are taken into account in designing EST courses.
On that basis, it tries to confirm the hypothesis if EST course practitioners designed a suitable
EST syllabus that includes professional-oriented material on the basis of students’ needs, their
attitudes towards such a course would improve. The research data is collected through two
questionnaires which were addressed to thirty-one students and four teachers at computer
science department. The obtained results have shown that both students and teachers are
highly motivated to take such professional material in a course based on the needs analysis of
the students. Some pedagogical recommendations are proposed to teachers for better design to
EST language course. |
