Our work is about EFL students’ ability to understand humorous scenes from the American sitcom ‘Friends”. More specifically, our aim is to prove that EFL students are not able to grasp humorous utterances from the American TV sitcom “Friends” unless they are provided with Arabic subtitles and, in some cases, additional cultural information. To collect the necessary data, we have relied on two research tools: a questionnaire and a test. The former serves to check the students’ familiarity with the sitcom “Friends”; this enabled us to select the appropriate population to be tested. The latter (test) aims at examining students’ comprehension of humorous utterances in the sitcom “Friends”. We provided the selected sample with a video made of sixteen scenes from the show, then asked them to answer seventeen multiple choice questions. After that, we showed them another video with the same scenes subtitled in Arabic, along with some cultural information about few terms in the scenes, and asked them to answer the same seventeen questions. At the end, we were able to compare the results before and after the Arabic subtitles and the cultural information, and we found out that the findings supported our hypothesis. In conclusion, the analysis affirmed the truthness of our hypothesis which states that adding Arabic subtitles and cultural information is necessary for the proper understanding of humorous scenes in the “Friends” TV sitcom by EFL students. |
