Résumé : |
The present research work aims at demonstrating the impact of one mode of Computer-
Mediated Communication known as Instant Messaging on students’ academic writing. It
investigates how Standard written English has been changed and adapted to suit the needs and
conditions of electronic communication through identifying a number of discourse and
linguistic features that are peculiar to the written English used in instant messaging. The
research aims primarily at examining the effect of instant messaging language on students’
academic written productions. To check the hypothesis that instant messaging influences
students’ academic writing negatively, data have been collected through a teachers’
questionnaire and a content analysis of real internet conversations used by thirty English
students at University of Constantine 1, in order to elicit teachers’ attitudes towards the
impact of instant messaging on academic writing and to check the features of instant
messaging language in the students’ conversations. The results of the quantitative analysis of
the questionnaire and the qualitative analysis of students’ online conversations confirmed the
hypothesis that written English is deteriorating to students’ academic writing due to the
overuse of instant messaging among students; instant messaging language is used not only in
informal situations, but it is prevalent in students’ academic assignments. Therefore, some
recommendations are stated to make students more aware about the negative effects of the
constant use of online communication on their academic writing skills, and how they improve
their levels in achieving successful writing |
