Résumé : |
This dissertation deals with the underachievement of African-Caribbean children in the
British school system, a system that is now dominated by a National Curriculum. The
problem of Black Caribbean children’s underachievement is of major concern because
these boys are not getting qualifications, cannot access higher education and jobs and
therefore are marginalised and disconnected from society. Government policies have
been inadequate in meeting the needs of these boys. Even if standards in education
have continued to improve, Black Caribbean children have not benefited from this in
comparison to other students. The failure of Black Caribbean children continues to be
an alarming phenomenon, despite years of multi-culturalism and education for
‘diversity’. The reasons for their underachievement are complex. Before conducting
these however, it was necessary to review the history of the black Caribbean
immigration to Britain, i.e. the main reasons behind their coming to Britain, their
geographical distribution in Britain and their cultural background which is different
from that of the host country. |
