Résumé : |
This study aims at showing the Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, of Kansas
1954’s influence on the struggle against segregation in the public means of transportation
(1950s-1960s). It is devided into three main chapters. The first chapter depicts the blacks’
situation and their fights against segregation before Brown 1954. Chapter two deals with the
Brown decision’s implementations and its direct and indirect impacts on other public arenas.
It shows how Americans and the world responded to Brown 1954. Desegregating public
schools in 1954 led to other decisions whereby blacks started to trust the judiciary system
afresh. Chapter three investigates thoroughly the manifestations of Brown 1954 and its
influence on the struggle against segregating laws in public means of transportation. These
Civil Rights activities emerged only after Brown 1954 in a differently modern shape. |

Index. décimale : |

Résumé : |
Understanding the recession is crucial for companies’ and individuals. Management needs to
implement effective strategies in order to overcome economic downturns. The aim of this
study is to determine what the causes of The Great Depression of 1929 were and the one of
2008 then to evaluate the impact of recessions on American companies and consumers in the
current recession. The research was carried out using secondary sources; books and journal
articles found through the university library and the internet. The research investigating the
American economy and the American consumer’s sentiment during the current recession
shows that consumers tend to change completely their behaviour accordingly with the
economic environment they live in. The study indicates also that not all companies faced the
same costs during the current recession. Finally, it has been noticed that economic mistakes
has been repeated and unwise decision have been taken leading to a new financial crisis |

AMERICAN AND BRITISH STUDIES AMERICAN WOMEN WORLD WAR II SOCIAL |
Index. décimale : |
420 Langue anglaise |
Résumé : |
This work analyses the position of American women before the Second World War
and how they stood against the American society which saw them as nothing more than
housewives. The purpose of this study is showing the important role that was played by
American women during World War II, by comparing it to their role before, which was
inactive and inefficient. Women during Depression were not socially accepted in the
workforce because work was considered to be only for men. Women’s place was at home
taking care of their kids and husbands. Many women challenged society and American men
by occupying certain jobs, but American society considered them as job stealers. Even
Government put some laws in an indirect way that prevented women from working. Few
Women worked before second world war especially during Depression but they were not
given the same salary as men for performing the same job. They worked for low wages; even
jobs that were occupied by American women during the 30s, were not socially accepted by
men. But in the 40s, American women started occupying important positions in society and
even in the Armed Forces; they became the man and the woman at the same time because
men were sent overseas for duty. So, American women were left alone. Women gained the
upper hand by showing men and society that they were capable of performing any job; they
were just not given a chance before WWII. American Women in the 40s proved that they
deserved to be given salaries as the same as men. They started improving themselves during
the Second World War by playing an important, courageous and unexpected role during this
period. |

American and British Studies Spanish American Beginning American Imperialism |
Index. décimale : |
420 Langue anglaise |
Résumé : |
This research aims at examining and describing the period which paved the way to the
emergence of the American state to the global stage including the territorial acquisitions and
westward expansionism. The Monroe Doctrine and its lingering effects were also exposed and
examined in this work. The latter, describes in a very clear and concise method the era of the
American intervention in the Latin American affairs including the Spanish-American war of
1898. The research’s most fundamental goal was to show weather the Spanish-American war
was the cornerstone of the emergence or the declaration of the American imperialism or was
due to the policy makers who were appointed at that period between the election of former
Presidents James Monroe, William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. In other words, this
research shows if American imperialism existed before the Spanish-American war or it was a
shifting point in the direction of American foreign policy |

American and British Studies EDUCATION BLACK CARIBBEAN |
Index. décimale : |
420 Langue anglaise |
Résumé : |
This dissertation deals with the underachievement of African-Caribbean children in the
British school system, a system that is now dominated by a National Curriculum. The
problem of Black Caribbean children’s underachievement is of major concern because
these boys are not getting qualifications, cannot access higher education and jobs and
therefore are marginalised and disconnected from society. Government policies have
been inadequate in meeting the needs of these boys. Even if standards in education
have continued to improve, Black Caribbean children have not benefited from this in
comparison to other students. The failure of Black Caribbean children continues to be
an alarming phenomenon, despite years of multi-culturalism and education for
‘diversity’. The reasons for their underachievement are complex. Before conducting
these however, it was necessary to review the history of the black Caribbean
immigration to Britain, i.e. the main reasons behind their coming to Britain, their
geographical distribution in Britain and their cultural background which is different
from that of the host country. |
