Résumé : |
In recent years, an increasingly large body of research has examined the common situation in
which one thing is said in order to express another. Although research has examined the
understanding of figurative language such as metaphor, irony and humour in some depth,
sarcasm has been less studied. Understanding sarcasm requires considering social and cultural
factors, which are often ignored in models of language and it poses a challenge on L2
learners. This dissertation is intended to investigate how Algerian learners of English after
four years of intensive learning, interpret and understand sarcasm in spoken English.
Participants were asked to identify humour and sarcasm in a video clip taken from the U.S.
TV sitcom BIG BANG THOERY and to report what cues they attended to while processing
sarcasm. Analysis revealed that students who have good level in English and are more
exposed to it orally by other media are able to detect the sarcastic expression by means of
diverse techniques to grasp the meaning in addition to their previous knowledge to those
kinds of sitcoms. We noticed that the strategy most used is that relied on non-verbal
communication such as: gestures, body language intonation ….etc, in relation to context
meaning. Our participants suggested that social, cultural background and interaction with
native speakers may enhance learning of English sarcasm and understand it while it is used.
This study is an open area for more study to be done on it in the future and sarcasm is an
important figurative language to be taught to our students |
