This research is a qualitative and quantitative study conducted to investigate an important
issue in writing; the impact of using the brainstorming (or listing) strategy on students’ final
papers. It attempts to find out whether students use this strategy or not when writing their
essays, and if they are aware of its usefulness in generating and organasing their thoughts or
Interest in this subject matter is ignated by the great importance of writing for EFL students
and the necessity for good methods to assist students in improving their composition skills,
especially in terms of finding an adequate number of thoughts for their essays and then
arranging them in a logically appropriate way. Data have been collected by means of a test
and a questionnaire administrated to a sample of third-year students randomly chosen at the
Department of English, Jijel University, during the academic year 2012-2013. After tabulating
and analyzing the results obtained, it has come to evidence that students’ papers include more
and better organised ideas if they brainstorm the topic first. Hence, teachers of the writing
skill should raise their students’ awareness to using this strategy whenever they compose
essays. |
