The current work aims at examining the awareness of students of English about the
importance of lexis in writing a composition. More specifically, it analyses the way master 1
students deal with lexical chunks while they are making their writing productions. We
hypothesize that if learners were more aware about the importance of lexical chunks, this
would help them improve their writing accuracy. To test this hypothesis, data have been
collected from a multiple-choice chunk test and a writing test, from a sample of M1 students
at the department of English in Mentouri University. The results have revealed that, because
of their lack of mastery and unawareness of the importance of lexical chunks, students’
writing productions seem to lack native –like language. This, in our eyes, can be improved if
the teaching of lexical chunks in EFL classrooms is reinforced |
