Résumé : |
This research aimed at investigating the problem of the interference of French in the English
spelling. More specifically, it focused on the interference in spelling English-French cognates. It
took the case of third year L.M.D students. In fact, the problem with cognates was that they had
similar but not identical form across both languages. Hence, it was hypothesized that errors in
spelling English-French cognates made by foreign learners of English are caused by the
interference of French. So, data was collected by means of a test and a questionnaire, from a
sample of third year students at the department of languages, Mentouri University, Constantine.
The tabulation, description and analysis of the data demonstrated that students’ lack of
knowledge about the spelling rules led them to rely on the French orthography to spell
English words. Hence the results go in the same direction as the aforementioned hypothesis.
Further, it was observed that errors decreased, whenever learners were familiar with
English words which confirmed that the problem of interference can be solved through enough
exposure to the English language. This can be achieved only by virtue of reading and practice. |
