This research investigates the problems encountered by Master 2 students, Mentouri
University 1, Department of Languages in translating idioms from English into Arabic. The
research is divided into two chapters: a theoretical chapter and a practical one. The theoretical
chapter discusses several issues that are related to translation in general and translation of
idioms in particular. The practical chapter consists of a test of 12 idioms that have been given
to the students to translate from English into Arabic. The idioms in question were of three
types and were put in a random order. The first type concerned transparent idioms, i.e. idioms
which can be interpreted from its constituent words. The second type dealt with semitransparent
idioms, i.e. idioms which are neither transparent nor opaque. The third type
concerns opaque idioms, i.e. idioms which cannot be interpreted on the basis of their
constituent words. We have proceeded like this so as to see which strategies students will use
in their translation. The results of the test have revealed that, basically, most students find
problems in translating idioms from English into Arabic. The results have also shown that
whenever the students have to cope with a familiar (highly used) idiom, they more or less
succeed to translate correctly. Besides, when the students had to translate a transparent idiom,
they use a good strategy. However, when they face opaque and unknown idioms, they failed
to translate correctly. Concerning the strategies the students used, they seem haphazard. We
believe that in order for students to improve their translation skills, they have to improve their
mastery of the language so as to be more and more familiar with different types of idioms |
