It attempts to confirm the following hypothesis; if students were aware of the cognate words they would avoid mistakes in their reading comprehension in English. This study is divided into two chapters, the first chapter is a theoretical part and the second one is practical part. In order to investigate the hypothesis we used two tools of research, a students’ questionnaire and a test, administered to randomly selected sample of thirty students. The analysis of the finding assumes that students are not really aware of the existence of the cognate words between French and English; they cannot master them because of the influence of French language on English. As a result their reading comprehension in English is affected due to the negative transfer.
