Although spoken American and British are generally mutually intelligible, there are enough differences to cause misunderstandings and misuse especially among EFL students. Students at Mentouri Brothers university seem to mix between the two varieties; therefore, this research aims to investigate the level of mutual awareness of the differences that exist between BrE and AmE at the level of grammar, vocabulary and spelling. It has been hypothesised that EFL Master 1 students can differentiate between British English and American English at the level of grammar, vocabulary and spelling. suit the technological development, giving birth to ‘texting language’. It focuses on how this
new language is shaped by texters and what are the linguistic features that do characterize it.
Choosing this subject is due to the fact that, in the hustle-bustle world that we live, texting
language becomes more necessary, prevalent, and popular not only among internet and
mobile users. It gets involved in more than its real domain, for instance, in schools by
students. They use texting even in their formal writings, essays and exam papers. In order to
see how this informality in language affects students’ writings, a test has been given to a
sample of first year master students of Language Sciences Studies. The test is composed of
ten messages; five of them are written in texting language to be decoded into Standard
English and the other five are written in Standard English to be translated in texting language,
in order to check the validity of our hypothesis. The research hypothesized that texting
language may affect students’ writings negatively. The results in most messages show that,
texting language has a negative impact upon learners to grasp over the written system. As
