(LMD) students of English as a foreign language, at the University of Constantine-
Mentouri. This work is based upon two hypotheses:
If third year LMD students of English, at Mentouri University, opted for learning English
as a foreign language, then they would be intrinsically motivated to learn English.
If third year LMD students of English, at Mentouri University, are provided with
opportunities that support their perceptions of competence, autonomy and relatedness, then
they would be intrinsically motivated to learn English as a foreign language. In order to
test the hypotheses of the present study, we carried out the investigation through two
questionnaires. The students’ questionnaire consists of 22 questions to a total number of
thirty-nine participants in third year (Language Sciences) learners of English as a foreign
language, at the University of Constantine. The teachers’ questionnaire consists of 15
questions to a total number of ten teachers at the same University, at the end of the
academic year 2011. The results obtained, using two means of research (the teachers’
questionnaire and the students’ questionnaire), reveal that third year LMD students of
English, at the University of Constantine, opted for learning English as a foreign language
because they are both extrinsically and intrinsically motivated to learn that language, and
they are not provided with opportunities that support their perceptions of competence and
autonomy in learning English as a foreign language. The pedagogical implications that

Thus, special practice and efforts should be devoted for them since EFL learners need to grasp fully and completely the concept of tenses, and apply them accurately to promote their level in writing. The present dissertation aims at investigating whether students of English at the Department of Letters and the English language at University “Des Frères Mentouri”, Constantine, are consistent in the use of English tenses when writing academic assignments or not. Hence, it is hypothesized that learners of English do not keep tenses consistent in academic writing. To check the validity of our hypothesis, we have administrated a questionnaire directed to fourteen Written Expression teachers at the Department of Letters and English, University “Des Frères Mentouri”, Constantine, to elicit their opinions about their students’ use of English tenses, to shed light on the importance of tense consistency in academic writing, and to offer them the opportunity to add further solutions that are considered relevant to the objective of the research work, to assist learners overcome their weaknesses and enhance their level in Written Expression. The results obtained have proved that students are not aware of the different rules of using the English tenses accurately; therefore, they shift back and forth between the different tense forms unconsciously. As a consequence, they execute a poor performance in writing, and it becomes harder for them to develop it due to their lack of proficiency and competence in the English grammar. Also, the findings confirmed the importance of keeping tenses consistent in order to achieve a smooth, clear, well-structured and comprehensive piece of writing.
