Résumé : |
This study aims at exploring the relation between the theme of decadence and Dorian
gray, the protagonist of Oscar Wilde’s only novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. The novel
belongs to gothic literature which is characterized by the use of horror, decay and gloomy
atmosphere. The novel establishes Wilde’s philosophy of art. Devoted to the school of
thought of Aestheticism and a mode of sensibility, Wilde believed that art possesses an
essential value. This attitude was revolutionary in Victorian England, where people believed
that art was just a carrier of morality. Decadence could be argued to be a faith instead of an
enlightenment movement, resulting in protests against realities, society and morals by means
of the Fin de siècle corrupted life styles. Wilde was able to create the character of Dorian
Gray who was responsible of his own destruction. The thesis will take as an issue whether
Dorian’s decadence is only due to him being influenced by Lord Henry, or whether there are
some underlying reasons. Through shedding light on the picture of Dorian gray, I claim that
Dorian’s downfall is also the outcome of his vanity and his narcissism. I attempt to Test this
hypothesis with the use of psychoanalytical approach to interpret the psyche of the main
characters as well as to interpret the painting.I will equally provide textual analysis to reveal
that Lord Henry’s bad influence on the protagonist was indeed behind his collapse, yet a
narcissistic, selfish Dorian is also at the origins of his demise |
