Applied Language Studies Translating Phrasal Verb look + particle |
Index. décimale : |
420 Langue anglaise |
Résumé : |
This research is a qualitative and quantitative study made to present one of learners’ real
problems in translation. That is, the translation of the phrasal verb ‘to look + particle’. It
attempts to find out the reason why First year English Master learners are unable to find the
appropriate or the right equivalents of the English phrasal verb ‘to look + particle’ into
Arabic. To achieve this aim, we hypothesize that if first year English Master students of
Applied Languages, Mentouri University of Constantine master the English phrasal verb ‘to
look’ with different particles, they will be able to translate it appropriately from English into
Arabic. The qualitative and quantitative research data are collected using a questionnaire and
a test. The qualitative research data are collected by the questionnaire to get information about
the learners’ knowledge and their familiarity with this typical English linguistic item. The
quantitative research data are collected by means of a test which consists of two exercises
which aim at having a picture on learners’ ability to translate the English phrasal verb ‘to look
+ particle’ into Arabic. The obtained results have shown the learners’ inability to translate this
phrasal verb into its exact Arabic equivalents, because of their ignorance and insufficient
exposure to it. They also show that learners tend to rely on the context which misleads them,
and the particle which makes them translate literally. Thus, their translation is unacceptable. |
