Résumé : |
Vocabulary is an extremely important part of foreign language learning. Learning and
acquiring it, however, can be a difficult and tricky task as it necessitates a lot of
attention, practice and memorization. Therefore, the teachers should do their best in
order to find the most effective techniques that can facilitate the process of vocabulary
learning and retention for their students. Our study recommends language games as an
efficient technique to do so. This research explores the impact of language games on
vocabulary teaching, learning, and retention in the case of fifty-six middle school
pupils with ages varying from eleven to twelve and belonging to two different classes
(AS1 and AS2). The twenty-eight pupils from AS1 formed the experimental group
and the twenty-eight students from AS2 formed the control group. The former dealt
with our research‘s target vocabulary through the use of language games and the latter
through definition, translation, and synonyms. In order to answer the research
questions, we collected data both quantitatively (teacher‘s questionnaire, and tests)
and qualitatively (classroom observation). The results from both the qualitative and
quantitative data showed that the language games had a positive impact on the pupils
from the experimental group as their post-test results were significantly higher than
those of the pupils from the control group. The vocabulary games also played a
positive impact on the experimental group‘s motivation and participation which once
again proves their effectiveness in vocabulary learning. |
