The present research seeks to investigate the use of paraphrasing as a strategy to learn English vocabulary on the grounds that this strategy makes the students look for more synonyms of words. It also examines the attitudes of first-year English students at University of Frères Mentouri to problems that they face in learning English vocabulary. To achieve these aims, we hypothesize that if first-year English students at University of Frères Mentouri, Constantine practise extensively paraphrasing, they will be able to develop their mastery of English vocabulary. To check the validity of this hypothesis, a test and a questionnaire are administered to a random sample of first-year English students at University of Frères Mentouri, Constantine. The obtained results have revealed that students face many problems in acquiring English vocabulary. Hence, this research attempts to solve these problems by suggesting the practice of paraphrasing as an effective way to enrich and develop their lexical item |
