The present research is both qualitative and quantitative study, which is carried out to investigate whether context is important in translating phrasal verbs or not and to find out the possible solutions in order to avoid wrong translations. It consists of two main chapters; the first one is concerned with giving definitions about translation, context and phrasal verbs, it also gives valuable information about the problems that learners may find in translating phrasal verbs from English into Arabic, and it glances at phrasal verbs in idioms. the second chapter consists of a test designed to figure out the students’ performance in translating phrasal verbs in and out of context, it attempts to have a picture about learners’ ability to translate the English phrasal verbs into Arabic, the data collected by means of the test is analyzed and presented by means of tables and figures, the results of the analysis show the learners’ inability to translate most of the phrasal verbs out of context from English into their exact equivalents in Arabic. They also show that context has helped the subjects of the research in translating phrasal verbs. Finally a conclusion is made up in order to give reasonable answers to the questions raised at the beginning of the research |
