Résumé : |
Much attention has been given to reading comprehension in recent years, especially to
answer learners’ reading comprehension problems. Indeed, first year English Language
students at the Departement of English, University "Des Frère Mentouri", Constantine are
said to have serious problems in reading comprehension. They are unable to understand
texts, books and articles especially when they encounter difficult lexical items. This is
mainly related to both, their poor stock of vocabulary and the lack of the use of pre-reading
strategies. The present study aims to investigate the role of vocabulary previewing as a prereading strategy in enhancing students’ reading comprehension level. We hypothesize that
if vocabulary previewing as a pre-teaching strategy is incorporated in the classroom while
reading, students’ reading comprehension will improve. To check our hypothesis, we have
used a descriptive method. Two main questionnaires were administered, one for teachers
and another one for first year students of English. The analysis of the teachers’ and the
students’ questionnaire showed that vocabulary previewing is important. It makes students
recognize the meaning of ambiguous words found in the text before starting reading which
facilitates the comprehension of the text. To sum up, the research hypothesis is confirmed.
Students can achieve comprehension in reading effecively as a result of using vocabulary
previewing strategy inside the classroom. |
