The present research attempts to test the students’ abilities in translating long complex
sentences from Arabic into English. It focuses particularly on the influence of the structures
of both Arabic and English sentences. It aims to investigate whether students of English, who
have already some background and knowledge of translation, are able to translate effectively
long complex sentences from Arabic into English or not. The hypothesis of this research
emphasises that if the students understand the meaning of the Arabic sentence, then they will
provide an appropriate English equivalent. To achieve our objective, the types of mistakes
used by the students in their translation sample sentences have been analysed to check their
ability in translating this particular type of sentences appropriately. The most common
translation theories, types, problems, sentence types and functions, in addition to the structure
of both languages have been discussed in the onset of this research work to stand as a
theoretical support for the analysis of the students’ data. The results of the analysis have
brought evidence on the learner’s inability to translate long complex sentences from Arabic
into English because they take only the literal translation into account, and they neglect the
contextual meaning that is presented throughout the different sentence structures |
