Résumé : |
This research aims at investigating the attitudes of learners towards word stress and the
problems they face in the use of stress at the word level. It is believed that appropriate use of
word stress enhances learner’s pronunciation and their intelligibility. The study suggests that
learners of English in the department of English at Constantine 1 University are aware of the
importance of word stress yet; most of them face many difficulties; as far as the appropriate
use of stress at the word level. That is to say their awareness is not reflected in their
performance. We hypothesized that if English learners have sufficient background knowledge
about stress; they can examine it they would be able to avoid the most problematic stress
patterns. In order to test the hypothesis, we used a questionnaire and a test. On one hand, the
questionnaire was administered to Master I Applied Language studies students to examine
their attitudes towards word stress and its relation with intelligibility. On the other hand, the
test is a second research tool that evaluates student’s errors and difficulties. The results
obtained from the questionnaire and the test confirmed our hypothesis, based on their
responses word stress is problematic area for the majority of the students |
