Résumé : |
Understanding the culture of the target language is an essential factor in the process
of teaching and learning a foreign language. However, this does not seem to be
given enough focus within the EFL at the Department of English at the University
of Mentouri Constantine. Most of the students master the linguistic skills to a
considerable extent but are not capable to use the language as required, as they are
not sufficiently knowledgeable about the target culture. The current study seeks to
demonstrate the extent to which learners of EFL know about the culture of the
English language at Frères Mentouri University, Constantine 1. More specifically, it
attempts to find out whether students of English are aware of the importance of
culture as an inseparable part from foreign language learning and how do students at
UMC view the relationship between English language and its culture. Another
aspect of this study is to determine to what extent does the awareness of these
students of the cultural aspects of English language affects their linguistic
performance. For the purpose of answering these research questions, a questionnaire
has been administrated to 40 students of Master one at the department of English.
The findings obtained reinforce the presumption underlying the present research;
although first year master students are aware of the importance of culture in their
learning of the English language, they are not adequately informed about the target
culture. |
