This study aims at investigating the interference of the first language when an EFL
learner is trying to speak English and how this interference is decreasing the students’ oral
performance. Interest in this topic stems from the observation that EFL learners in their early
stages tend to think in their first language during their attempts to speak English and this is why
that their English sounds much like Arabic. This research focuses on exploring the impact and
reasons why this phenomenon keeps occurring. It is hypothesized that the influence of the first
language is likely to hinder English learners from attaining a good level of oral performance.
To check the validity of this hypothesis the questionnaire is used as a data collection means in
this study. We designed and administered a questionnaire to 46 students randomly chosen from
second-year LMD population at the Department of English at Mentouri University,
Constantine. After data analysis, the hypothesis of this research was confirmed. To find
appropriate remedies that would eventually help the learners to cope with the influence of first
language in decreasing EFL students speaking proficiency, some pedagogical
recommendations are put forward as how assist learners in reducing this interference and trying
to speak the English language fluently. |
