| Résumé : |
For many students the prime goal of learning a foreign language is to be able to speak it
properly and fluently. Practicing the language in an enjoyable and non-restricting
environment might be the key to achieve this goal. The present study aims to explore the
effects of informal online interaction as a digital practice by students in enhancing their
speaking proficiency. The work is mainly concerned with making use of modern technology,
specifically the communicative applications like: Facebook, Telegram, Zoom, Skype, etc. to
maximize the students’ use of English outside the classroom. For this purpose, the basic
hypothesis adopted in this research sets that the use of informal online interaction would
have a positive influence on the students’ speaking skill. The method of this research work
is descriptive. The data were gathered through self-completion questionnaires administered
to a sample of 40 first-year students and to 10 teachers who have taught Oral Expression at
the Department of Letters and English, Mentouri University, Constantine 1. The
questionnaires obtain the necessary information about the students’ self-evaluation of their
level of speaking proficiency, their attitude towards OE sessions, and their opinions towards
informal online interaction as a technique to enhance their speaking skill. The analysis of the
questionnaires reveals that online interaction with speakers of the language helps students
improve their speaking skill to some extent, thus confirms our research hypothesis. However,
it still has some negative impact in their academic English. Eventually, we advocate for the
use of an enjoyable way of practicing speaking through digital online practices to enhance
the speaking skill |
