The aim of this study is to find out whether students of English recognize the differences between the two varieties of English; British and American English. If they are aware of their usage, and if this hybrid use affect the student’s production of English. British English is normally the variety taught in university, but influences of American English due to some exposure to mass media are strong and have great influences on the students of the University, Constantine. The study took place in University 1, Constantine, and a sample of 60 EFL Master one students participated in the investigation. They filled out a test which investigates the student’s knowledge of the varieties of English, if they are aware of the differences at level of Spelling, Grammar, and Vocabulary. The study showed that the tendency among students that they know American English more than British English mainly in spelling, that might to do with their addiction to American movies and series. The study also indicated that many students are knowledgeable of the features of the two varieties, American and British features. A higher number of students had preferences for American English, and that make them appear to be more aware of which variety they use, and in general more aware of the differences between British and American English. |
