Résumé : |
Most women in the Victorian era were misdiagnosed as insane and wrongfully shut in
mental asylums. The horror which women experienced inside mental asylums is absolutely
worthy of attention. The basic interest of this dissertation is to give further insights about the
mistreatment and misconception of the mentally ill women in the Victorian era. In
windowless shabby rooms these women spent the rest of their lives, just because they
attempted to reach the freedom men had always enjoyed. They hopelessly gazed at the Gate
with tears scarcely leaving their eyeballs only to realize that there is no way out but death. In
this respect, Bertha Mason, the madwoman in Charlotte Bronte’s most celebrated work Jane
Eyre serves the purposes of this study. It also reveals how Bertha Mason embodies the
Victorian female’s frustration in a patriarchal society. The work, thus, attempts to defend this
stand on the basis of feminist, psychoanalytical and postcolonial criticism. |
