Résumé : |
This dissertation analyzes Shakespeare’s portrayal of the character Shylock in The Merchant
of Venice who adheres to stereotypes of the Jewish population. I aim to show that complex
characters such as Shylock must be examined as a multidimensional representation of human
nature, and not as isolated individuals in a piece drama and that When placed in its original
historical and cultural context, the struggle in the play is to be highlighted as a struggle based
upon religious and mercantile issues and attitudes that have long been perpetuated in drama
against the Jews. Therefore, I attempt to show that the evil 'bond dramatized in this play is the
origin of the irrationality that Shylock, Antonio and Bassanio express. Obviously, the bond itself
is devoid of reasonableness and it can logically be said that all those involved with the bond
including the creator and the acceptors are equally unreasonable. It is the aim of this work to
analyze the stereotypes held against the Jews; as attributed to Shylock and to review the chief
sources Shakespeare adopted when constructing his play. In order demonstrate that he did indeed
collude in perpetuating the stereotype of the Jew, but that he equally shifted from-these sources
that shall be tackled |
