Résumé : |
This research aims at investigating a significant area of translation where negative transfer
takes place ,i.e., false cognates or false friends. It sheds light on the difficulties that translation
students face when translating false friends from French into English in the legal discourse.
We hypothesized that if students of translation have background knowledge about the
phenomenon of false friends in legal discourse, they will avoid errors and negative transfer,
therefore they will enhance their capacities in translating specific texts such as the legal
discourse ones. To check the validity of this hypothesis, we administered a test to a sample of
the fourth year translation students at the department of translation, University of
constantine1. The results show that the majority of translation students are not aware enough
about false friends in legal discourse. In addition to that they were unable to find the
appropriate legal term from French into English which made the translation of sentences was
a little bit difficult for them. As a result the meaning of the translated sentences was distorted
by the students’ translation |
