Cognates are words that share the same semantic and similar phonological/morphological
forms across two languages. This study is an investigation of the extent to which the EnglishFrench cognates influence the second language vocabulary development of first-year EFL
learners at the Department of English, University of Constantine 01. It aims at knowing the
extent to which students are able to identify French cognates and use them to comprehend
English new words and enlarge and develop their vocabulary. Our hypothesis stated that that
if first- year EFL learners used French cognates, they would enrich and develop their English
vocabulary. To check the validity of our hypothesis we have used a questionnaire,
administrated to first-year EFL learners. The analysis of the questionnaire showed that the use
of cognates could be helpful for students in developing their vocabulary since the two
languages share a lot of similarities. |
