Résumé : |
The issue of gender roles is a central theme in Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God. The basic interest of this study is to conduct a substantial exploration of the feminine quest for identity in the novel. This dissertation endeavors to exhibit the patriarchal barriers that most twentieth century African American women had to cross over in order to find their own voices. Ergo, the goal of the study is to shed light on how Hurston depicts the struggle of black women to achieve their selfhood. In this regard, the research is helpful to convey the different ways through which a woman can overcome the oppressive and sexist societal norms.
