Résumé : |
The purpose of this study is to shed light on students’ attitudes towards the use of British and
American English and on their actual use of those varieties. It is hypothesized that Students
do not use one variety consistently, that they prefer American English, and that this latter is
popular among students while British English is popular among teachers. To check the
validity of these hypotheses, a written questionnaire, coupled with a pronunciation and
spelling test, were targeted to a random sample of fifty second-year EFL students at the
Université des Frères Mentouri-Constantine 1. The questionnaire helps to check the students’
claims about the use of a specific variety of English while the test helps to recognize the use
of the two varieties in their actual performance. The obtained results show that the
participants do not use one variety consistently; rather, they unconsciously use a hybrid
version of the two predominant varieties. In their performance, however, it is quite obvious
that they prefer the American variety rather than the British one which they report is preferred
by their EFL teachers due to the department’s encouragement of that variety |
