Résumé : |
In Higher Education, assessment is important in identifying the learners’ needs, in measuring their
learning and progress, and evaluating the teaching methods and outcomes. The present study aims at
investigating the students’ attitudes towards assessment at the department of English at the Université
des Frères Mentouri, Constantine 1. It also aims at investigating how those attitudes are related to
their satisfaction with the assessment practices in the department, to provide teachers with insights
about the importance of explaining the criteria of assessment to their students. It was hypothesised
that: The clearer the standards of assessment are communicated to students, the more positive are
their attitudes towards the assessment practices. In order to check the validity of our hypothesis, a
questionnaire was administered to fifty second-year students of English at the department under
study to measure their attitudes towards assessment, then a correlational study was conducted to
confirm or reject our hypothesis. The results have confirmed the hypothesis. A strong correlation was
found between the variables, but the levels of understanding of assessment standards as well as that
of satisfaction with assessment practices were found to be only average. Conclusions and
recommendations are drawn on the light of these findings. |
